Chapter 13

"Pray for you? Pray?"
"Nick? What is it, baby?"
Nick's eyes opened to meet Jane's. "What happened?"
"You tell me. We found you on the floor, passed out. What
happened?"
Nick took in a deep breath. He hardly knew himself. "The
girl. Georgia. Is she okay?"
Nick cast her eyes down. "I don't think so. I heard that
she's slowly slipping away. Unless a miracle happens, they expect
her to die within the next day. Honey, what are those tears
for?" She reached up her hand to lightly brush away a few
tears that escaped from his eyes.
"I don't know. Mom, don't take this the wrong way, but can I
just be alone for a while? I'm not feeling so well."
"Should I go get Doctor Green?"
"No. I just need some rest."
"You've got it. I'll see you bright and early in the morning
to take you home."
"So soon?" His eyebrows scrunched together, causing her
to laugh.
"Don't tell me you want to stay!" He didn't know what
he wanted. "I'll see you tomorrow. Sleep well, my handsome
son."
"G'night Mom." Nick watched as she left the room,
blowing him a kiss on her way out. Biting his bottom lip, he
pushed the covers away and sat up, his eyes fixed on the bed next
to him. Carefully, he walked over and sat on the chair next to
her bed. With much hesitation, he looked at her, thoroughly.
"I don't know what happened earlier, but I intend to find
out. You have to tell me, somehow." His hand reached up and
took hold of hers.

"I never thought I would see the day, Nick. I've watched you
grow up into a very mature young man. Handsome too, but not
nearly as handsome as me."
"Gee, Brian, your sentiment is touching, really." Nick
laughed and shook his head as Brian slapped a hand on his back.
"This is your big day. You're very very lucky. Georgia is a
peach. I wish you could see you two together. The love
it's
so obvious. This halo of love beams off of you when you're close.
It's very powerful, Nick."
"I love her, more than I ever thought I could love someone
in my life. She's my soul. I can't wait to spend the rest of my
days with her."
"Well, it's almost time. I'm going to go ahead and sit down.
Much luck to you. I love you, man." Brian and Nick embraced
in a brotherly hug, before smiling and parting - Brian sitting in
the front row, Nick up at the alter. As he looked around him, he
realized that the day was breathtakingly perfect - and beautiful.
They were on a gorgeous beach, sparkling blue ocean and crystal
white sand. Music picked up. Nick's eyes followed the white
carpet on the sand that led to the feet of his wife-to-be.
She took his breath away. The white wedding gown flowed and
swayed as she slowly made her way to the alter. Her honey blonde
hair was pulled back and cascaded over her back in an abundance
of curls. Her hair was adorned with tiny white flowers. She
carried a bouquet of peach colored roses. Nick's eyes watered as
she came closer and closer to him. She smiled, and knew that his
life was complete, from this moment on.
Even as he placed the ring on her finger, his heart pounded in
his chest. And when the pastor said those final words, Nick
leaned in, kissed Georgia, his wife, and knew that life was
perfect. For now, and always.
**
Nick's eyes opened and a few tears that had been entrapped behind
his lids slowly slid down his face. The monitors buzzed and
beeped. Yet she lay there, breathing and pale. And he could do
nothing. There was a connection between them. He remembered Dr.
Green telling him about the out-of-body experience and suddenly,
it all came to him. All the memories, the flashbacks, the
glimpses of heaven and his future life - all of them came back.
"Dear God, I don't know why or how Georgia is here, but I
ask, I beg of you, whatever purpose she has, please keep her here
long enough to fulfill it. Please don't let it end like this.
Please, God." Nick stood up and stood over the Georgia.
"I don't know how things will be when you wake up, but
whatever happens, I'll have these memories of you. Memories of
things possibly to come. Please stay here." He bent down and
softly kissed her lips.
